SuperStream FAQs

Whether you know little about SuperStream or a lot, you’ll benefit from reading our FAQs.

What is SuperStream?

SuperStream is a government initiative that makes the processing of everyday superannuation transactions easier and more efficient.

SuperStream has essentially standardised the exchange of information between super funds and employers. All contributions must now be paid electronically and data must meet the standards set by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).

Why was SuperStream introduced?

Since employee choice of fund was introduced, employers have faced a growing administrative burden of processing employee contributions to numerous funds in different formats. SuperStream removes these complexities and enables employers to process employee contributions in a consistent, timely and efficient manner.

What are the benefits?

Employers have a simpler and more consistent way of making contributions, especially those employers who pay contributions into multiple funds. There are potential time and cost-savings thanks to a single channel for sending contributions.

How does this help my employees?

A stronger and more efficient superannuation system ultimately helps boost retirement incomes for working Australians. That’s a good outcome for your employees.

Does SuperStream affect my organisation?

SuperStream affects all employers who make superannuation contributions on behalf of their employees.

When did it start?

If you have 20 or more employees, SuperStream started on 31 October 2015.

If you have less than 20 employees, you needed to be compliant by 28 October 2016.

What if I’m not SuperStream compliant yet?

If you or your payroll software provider is not SuperStream compliant, the Australian Taxation Office may ask you to produce a plan on how and when you will be ready to meet your new obligations, so it’s best to act now. If you need any assistance you can call us on 1300 130 780.

I’m not sure if my payroll provider is compliant. What should I do?

Contact your payroll provider and ask if they are compliant with the new SuperStream data and payment standard. If your payroll software isn’t compliant (or you don’t use any), you may find a provider or software solution in the SuperStream certified Product Register maintained by the ATO.
